About This Spot

Stepping into Barba Yianni Grecian Taverna, you’re gently transported to a warm corner of Greece tucked right in Chicago’s Lincoln Square. The restaurant carries an inviting, relaxed rhythm that feels unhurried and genuine — the kind of place where you can settle in and soak up the familiar hum of conversation alongside the soft clink of glasses. Whether you arrive for a quiet dinner or a lively get-together, there’s a comfortable balance between rustic charm and heartfelt hospitality that instantly welcomes you.

The atmosphere is thoughtfully layered, with natural wood accents and soft lighting that warmly embrace diners, while the outdoor seating offers a peaceful retreat on sunnier days. It’s evident this isn’t just a spot to eat but a place where moments are savored, whether it’s a casual midweek meal or a special celebration with friends and family. The staff moves attentively without rushing, helping you feel connected without ever crowding the space.

Food and drink here mirror that sense of care and tradition. The menu draws from classic Greek and Mediterranean roots, emphasizing fresh, vibrant ingredients that evoke a Mediterranean garden in full bloom. There’s a sense of generosity in both portions and flavors — from colorful salads layered with the bright tang of olives and feta to rich, comforting dishes like lamb chops and savory mezes that invite sharing and conversation. The balance of familiar homestyle preparations alongside thoughtful culinary touches allows each plate to feel both satisfying and nuanced, encouraging moments of discovery with every bite.

This is a place where the human moments of dining come to life: the easy laughter over shared plates, the soft-spoken recommendations from servers who clearly know the menu and care about your experience, and the quiet contentment of a meal that feels both timeless and thoughtfully crafted. It’s exactly the kind of neighborhood taverna that makes you want to return, whether for a meaningful event or simply to step away from the city’s pace and into something a little slower, a little warmer.

DoorDash order Sunday, August 24, 2025 at 3:43 PM: 1 Gyros Plate, 1x Shrimp Kebob, 1 Poseidon Salad, with an extra order of Pita and Tzatziki. Tiramisu for dessert. Order and DoorDasher were quick, food was still warm. Gyro, Octopus Salad, Tiramisu were all good. Biggest complaint was the Shrimp Kebob. Most expensive single item ($27.00) and only came with 4 shrimp. Everything included in the kebob was charred and inedible. The shrimp was way overcooked with large char markings (as seen in picture). Pretty upset with the shrimp and hope the restaurant sees this and makes good on it.

We through wedding shower for our son and his bride at this wonderful restaurant. Anas and his staff were amazing and addressed every detail to make it a perfect event. The food and wine were delicious and plentiful. The service was "spot on!" I highly recommend this restaurant to hold a special celebration or event.

This Greek stop provides a good menus selection and brings some of the best service I've seen in years. Barba Yianni did a fantastic job with our dishes and sent us into the evening very happy.

This is a very nicely decorated Traditional Greek restaurant in Lincoln Square that has lovely outdoor seating. I had the lamb chops which were excellent and the seasoning was delicious and my husband had the chicken lemonati which he loved. The portions were very generous and the price was right. Our server Tamara was very nice and food came out timely and we were very pleased. We highly recommend this restaurant. The chef knows how to cook lamb chops perfectly.

We had a great experience at Barba Yianni Grecian Taverna. The atmosphere was inviting, and the service was excellent. Vlad, our server, was a young and respectable Romanian gentleman who was attentive and professional throughout our meal. The food was very good! The Musaca was especially flavorful and well-prepared. The Chicken Kabob was tasty, though the veggie side was a bit oily and not my favorite. The Greek fries were fantastic—crispy, well-seasoned, and a must-try. Their Egg-Lemon soup tasted good too! For drinks, we had the Greek coffee, which was lighter than a traditional Turkish coffee. It was decent but not the highlight of the meal. Overall, a great spot for Greek cuisine, and we’d definitely return!

This place is warm and wonderful. My wife and I went here on a date night before we went to a movie. The staff is very kind and the restaurant has a lovely, dark atmosphere. The menus were in tablets, which I thought was very cool and modern. I ordered the Gyros Plate and my wife ordered the chicken breast lemonati. We were blown away by the flavors and the generous portions, which could have made two meals, if we wanted. They have outdoor seating that is covered by an awning and plenty of indoor seating with an event space. The one weird thing is that there are slot machines in the back of the restaurant, which is kind of tacky and depressing. I would highly recommend it!

One of my all time favorite restaurants, 20+ years going strong, with Greek taverna classics. Can’t beat the outdoor patio in the summer, and great vibe indoors as well. Standouts include grilled octopus, kolokithakia, spaghetti, charbroiled chicken and perhaps the best lamb chops (pictured) I have had in the US.
